Paying the price...

Gone are the days when a million dollar house means a long asphalt drive, expansive lawns, a 25m glamour-pool, four bedrooms and vast living areas.

Our investigations have found that while $1m will still buy that, it’s just a question of where one is prepared to live.

We’ve taken a brief fly around the country, and the world, to see what one million Australian dollars will buy in the current residential real estate market, and there were quite a few surprises.

Kicking off locally, $1m in Brisbane looks like this.

Ascot, $1,050,000 A very modest 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom timber house on 405m² on the premium Racecourse Road. (Prestigious Ascot is set to become Brisbane’s first million dollar suburb with the current median house price being $912,000).

New Farm, $1.1 million Four bedroom, 2 bathroom, “Orama”, currently marketed by Ivan Lazarou Real Estate, is a traditional Queenslander residence, on 607m² of land close to the Brisbane River, in the cosmopolitan suburb of New Farm.

Robertson, $980,000 Five bedroom, 3 bathroom modern residence on 779m² land, 12 km from the Brisbane GPO, in the southside suburb of Robertson. The house includes air conditioning, security, ducted vacuum and intercom.

Further afield in Queensland with $1 million, the following properties are available.

Broadbeach, Gold Coast, $975,000 Three bedroom, three bathroom, “Beachside Villa”, duplex, including pool, courtyard, security and fireplace.

Rockhampton, $980,000 Modern executive residence on the river in the centre of town. Land size is 6.2 acres of landscaped gardens. House includes 600m² of living space, including five bedrooms.

Port Douglas, $980,000 Modern four bedroom, four bathroom pavilion style home in the Lakes Gated Estate on 1000m² of land. If you are after actual beachfront property in Port Douglas, take about four times this amount, but for that expect something spectacular.

New South Wales...

Vaucluse $1,000,000 Available, is a very modest two bedroom, 1 bathroom semi-detached brick home on a compact 297m² of land, in the ultra exclusive Vaucluse.

Bondi, Just over $1,000,000 Cute three bedroom, 1 bathroom brick home on 265m² of land, and only 7km from the Sydney CBD.

Byron Bay, $990,000 Four bedroom, three bathroom decidedly unspectacular beach house on 521m² of land. Only a 5 minute walk to main beach. If you are after absolute beachfront on one of the neighbouring beaches, expect to pay upwards of $2.5 million for a spectacular view, but not necessarily a magnificent house.

Tasmania...

Launceston, $1,000,000 Exquisite Queen Anne Federation mansion with views of the Tamar River. Three storey comprising eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms (eight toilets), absolutely incredible, live like royalty.

We took our million dollar budget to faraway lands to see what it would buy.

United States New York City, Battery Park City, just under $1,000,000 Two bedroom apartment (four rooms in total) with views of the New York Harbor. Includes a kitchen and dining ‘nook’. The building has an elevator, common garden and roof top deck. Walk to Wall Street, Battery Park, Ground Zero, Tribeca and Soho. Pets allowed, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s room to swing a cat.

Italy, Tuscany Around $750,000 “Casavecchia” is a picturesque old stone farm house, which has been converted into two apartments. Property includes house and stables, a young orchard, 8 hectares of woodland and 8 hectares of pasture. Only 500m away from the uninhabited medieval village of Bivignano. Definitely the destination for many holidays to remember. However, those familiar with the BBC series, A Place in Italy, will no doubt be aware that purchasing real estate in Italy can be less than straightforward.

Vanuatu, $950,000 Magnificent modern, three bedroom, three bathroom residence with indoor outdoor pool on 3675m² of land including 33m of private white sandy beach. Paradise for less than $1 million.
